It seems that development in babies goes in spurts. Some days they seem the same as yesterday, other days, it seems like they must have had some type of baby epiphany while they slept. Charlotte must have had a few nights of deep, profound thought, because she has learned so many new things in the last month it’s just astounding. To consider the mental and physical development that was needed to achieve these new activities makes my brain cramp. When you think about how much it really takes to will a body part to do something it has never been capable of doing before, I am amazed – no wonder babies need so much sleep.
Ah to sleep – perchance to dream. There’s been a lot of wonderful sleep in our house the last month. Charlotte took exactly one night to learn to sleep through the night. There have been a few hiccups since then, but they’ve lasted less than 5 minutes and some nights not at all. She sleeps soundly from about 8pm to 5am. We’ve tried to adjust it to match up with our waking time in the morning (6:15am) but it doesn’t seem to work, so I just get up and feed her, then go back to bed for a quick catnap until the alarm goes off. Small price to pay for an almost full night of sleep.
Thanksgiving:
Thanksgiving went very well. Lots of food and family. Charlotte was a great baby the whole evening while being held by lots of new people, lots of dogs barking, and all sorts of new smells from the tasty goodness of that particular holiday. She enjoyed some sweet potato puree!
Rolling Over:
So, for a while now, Charlotte will roll from her tummy to her back occasionally at daycare, but never for us. In the last two weeks, she has begun to roll from her back to her stomach when she goes to sleep. It’s a bit clumsy, sometimes taking a break with an arm still tucked under her oddly before making it the whole way, but she consistantly sleeps for the majority of the night on her stomach. The only down side is that she’s still not good at going from stomach to back, so if she wants to turn over she gets very upset and cries until she gets some assistance.
First Ride in a Grocery Cart:
Up until the end of November, Charlotte was too small and unstable to ride in the grocery cart on her own. Since then shes been doing really well with sitting, so we thought she could try it out. It went great! She really enjoyed being able to see everything that was going on and she loved holding onto the handle bar. I had to stuff my purse behind her so she wouldn’t slide around though – she’s still so tiny.
New Snow Suit:
Although she still seems like such a peanut, Charlotte has already outgrown her first snow suit and is into the next size up. We decided to go for something a little better insulated given the sharp cold snap we’re currently experiencing. She has plenty of room to grow in this one and hopefully it will last until the temperatures become more moderate (we have a couple jackets that she should fit in by then to carry her through to Spring).
New Bath Tub:
Charlotte is now too tall and too strong to use the newborn tub (where the back slopes) as she pushes off with her feet and has come dangerously close to ejecting herself from the tub entirely. We’ve now moved up to the normal baby tub with the flat bottom. A little more challenging for us as she wiggles all over the place, but one step closer to the real bath.
The discovery of making noise:
It’s been a couple weeks now, but Charlotte has discovered two new things about herself and noise. 1) She can make loud noises with her voice. It still surprises her (and us) occasionally, but she can get some real volume going now. 2) When you bang things together, they make noise – sometimes a LOT of noise. These black plastic cups are a favorite on the bumbo tray.

Great to have the update on all the Albosta achievements! I wish we were visiting DC this year and had the chance to meet little Charlotte, but unfortunately it wasn’t in the cards this year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!
