At the end of June we went to Andrew’s company’s summer picnic. There were so many babies!! Charlotte was not the youngest, but definitely the smallest! It was quite warm out but we stayed in the shade and even took a break in the car AC for a while. However, near the end of the picnic Charlotte and mommy were done with the heat!
We had a lovely 4th of July at my parents house. In the evening after dinner we went out to the front yard to watch their neighbors set off fireworks. Andrew had some little rockets and sparklers too. We found out some interesting factoids:
1. Charlotte can sleep through almost anything – she was asleep just before we went outside and only stirred once when the first firework was set off. After that, she snoozed the whole time!
2. My sister’s 12 yr old dog, Basil, likes fireworks! Who knew?! We’d never actually paid attention before and just assumed he hated fireworks like most dogs. Well, as you can see from the picture, he was very relaxed near them. In fact, he ended up with a slightly burnt eyebrow when he tried to catch a burning ember from a sparkler.
3. Our little dog, Austin, on the other hand, not only hated the fireworks, but spent the whole time sitting between my parents front door and their storm door – good thing he’s a little dog. He spent the rest of the night sitting on Andrew’s lap looking pathetic.
The Start of Colic
We’ve been having some colic issues lately. The books say that it can set in around 3 weeks, sometimes later for preemies. Well, given that Charlotte was 7 weeks this past Saturday and she was 4.5 weeks early, I guess it’s right on schedule. It’s not horrible, and luckily the majority of her unhappiness is during the day. The best remedy so far is either walking around with her in the moby wrap or laying her down on her tummy across my leg with a pacifier in her mouth.
I’m now abstaining from tomato and egg heavy foods and any of the usual gas producing suspects. I’m hoping it will help, but compaed to some colic stories I’ve heard, she has a mild case that we will survive.
New Threads and Cute Pics!
Charlotte is now a healthy 8.5 lbs and is finally fitting in the majority of newborn clothes she has (still too small for most of the 0-3 months yet). In addition, now that she’s over the 8 lbs mark, we’ve switched to size 1 diapers!!! We can now buy them at Costco! Hurray! They’re a bit big on her, but not so big that they don’t function correctly.
Austin has also finally decided she is a person, and worth playing with, or at least trying to engage. Charlotte spends a little time each day on her activity mat. She stares up at the toys and lights and then we do a little tummy time. Just once, Austin dropped his ball by Charlotte’s hand and she inadvertently rolled it across the floor. Well, dogs only need a reward once, so now, whenever she’s on the mat, he offers the ball and waits.
